Ambystoma mexicanum, commonly known as ‘The Mexican Walking Fish’ or ‘Axolotl’, are originally found in the two high altitude lakes in Mexico; Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalcoin. The Axolotl is an amphibian, a member of the salamander family and closely related to the Tiger Salamander. Although, unlike Tiger Salamanders, only rarely will the axolotl morph. Axolotl are neotenic, which means they can remain in the larval stage and reach sexual maturity without the need to morph into adult form. The axolotl also possess amazing healing abilities in which they can regenerate limbs and parts of vital organs. They can live up to fifteen years of age and reach lengths of over 30cm long. Today axolotl are feared to be extinct in the wild but thrive in home aquariums around the world.
